Sekolah dipindah kerana kurang murid

SIBU: Setelah wujud lebih 80 tahun di Bintangor, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Kai Ming akhirnya terpaksa dipindahkan ke Bintulu.

Perpindahan sekolah yang terletak di Sungai Meradong, Bintangor ini dilakukan berikutan masalah kekurangan murid, sekali gus dikategorikan sebagai Sekolah Kurang Murid (SKM).

Menurut bekas Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Meradong Thomas Hii, perpindahan itu susulan kerja-kerja pemindahan sebelum ini yang melibatkan SJK Tong Ya di Sungai Tulai, Bintangor ke Selangau pada 1999.

“Pemindahan SJK Kai Ming ini merupakan satu detik bersejarah dan lembaran baharu kepada sekolah, demi kebaikan sekolah ini,” ujarnya ketika berucap pada majlis perpindahan sekolah terbabit, baru-baru ini.

Hadir sama ialah Guru Besar SJK Kai Ming Lee Kao Kiong dan Pengerusi Lembaga Pengurusan Sekolah Tong Chu Ming.

SJK Kai Ming mula beroperasi pada 1932 dan sepanjang 80 tahun kewujudannya, sekolah ini telah mencatat pelbagai keputusan cemerlang.

Ketika waktu kemuncaknya, sekolah ini pernah mempunyai lebih 100 murid. Namun sekolah ini terpaksa dipindah kerana hanya mempunyai enam murid.

Hii berkata, kekurangan murid ini mungkin berlaku akibat perpindahan keluar penduduk ke bandar, sekali gus menyebabkan jumlah murid di sekolah terbabit berkurangan.

Menyentuh mengenai SJK Tong Ya, beliau memberitahu bahawa perpindahan sekolah itu ke Selangau telah menyaksikan jumlah pelajar yang semakin meningkat, selain sekolah berjaya mencapai kecemerlangan dalam pendidikan.

“Kita berharap dengan kerja-kerja pemindahan ini, SJK Kai Ming akan turut mengalami perkara yang sama,” jelas beliau sambil menambah keputusan memindahkan sekolah itu perlu bagi meneruskan kesinambungan kewujudan sekolah.

Di samping itu, Hii juga berterima kasih kepada Ahli Parlimen Bintulu dan Senator Pau Ching Ung atas bantuan sepanjang kerja-kerja pemindahan sekolah terbabit.

Co-curriculum may be considered if UPSR, PMR to be axed — D-G

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Co-curriculum achievements will probably be considered in the evaluation of a student’s performance if the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examinations are to be abolished.Director-General of Education Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom, however, said that the government needed to conduct detailed study and give fair consideration to the opinion from all quarters before making any decision on the proposed abolishment of the two examinations.

“Maybe co-curriculum will become one of the aspects (to be considered for performance evaluation), but I don’t want to comment further as the matter should be discussed with the Education Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) first.”

He said this at a press conference after closing the Malaysian International Friendship Jamboree, here yesterday.

He was commenting on the possibility that co-curriculum achievements would become one of the aspects to be considered in the student’s performance evaluation if the examinations were to be abolished.

Prior to this, Muhyiddin, who is Deputy Prime Minister, said the Education Ministry was studying the possibility of abolishing the UPSR and PMR examinations in future because the present learning aspects were seen as too examination oriented and failed to provide a holistic education.

Among the possibilities being studied are that the UPSR and PMR examinations would only be continued as an assessment of the students’ achievements at the school level only, and not as a public examination. — Bernama

Liow:Ministry to Provide Oral Health Care to More Rural Schools

KUCHING: The difficult terrains in the interior parts of Sarawak have hampered the Health Department from providing oral health care to all the 1,260 primary schools in state. As for last year, about five percent of the schools are located to a very interior areas were not covered due to difficulties in reaching them by air, land or river.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who acknowledged this problem faced by the state Health Department, hopes solution can be found when a review on this service is made this July. He said the service should cover more schools int the rural areas so that students there are not being deprived of free oral health care.

"We hope to cover 98 percent of all the schools by end of this year" he told reporters after launching the 1Malaysia ORal Health Awareness campaign at a shopping mall here yesterday. Earlier during his speech, Liow said he was happy the Oral Health division has made significant achievements in the provision of health care in Sarawak. He said they did only not cover 95.2 percent or 1,202 primary schools in Sarawak comprising 252,558 schoolchildren, but also provided oral health care to 46,410 children in 1,456 kindergartens in Sarawak representing 65 percent of pre-school children last year.

SRK St Mary's devt fund gets RM1 mln boost from Najib

SIBU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has allocated 1 million for SRK St Mary's development project. He told the school about the allocation during his visit to the school late yesterday evening.

With the RM1 million, the school board has now collected RM1.7 million for the development project. Before this, RM200,000 was allocated in the stimulus package and recently Deputy Prime Minister allocated another RM500 000 for the project.

The school board and Rev Fr Paul Ling thanked the Prime Minister for his contribution to the school. The total cost for the school development project is estimated to be RM3 million with phase one estimated at RM2 million. The existing wooden buildings of the school is now very run-down dilapidated and congested besides being flood-prone.

The school is in urgent need of more classrooms and other facilities to provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils. Works to replace the physical infrastructure of the school actually started in September last year on a 1.1 acre site behind the existing school building.

The extension programme consists of a teaching block of 28 classrooms, a toilet block and a covered basketball court cum multipurpose hall. On the latest development of the project, the contractor so far has completed the first phase of piling.
