KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers want parents and the community at large to be their partners in imparting sex knowledge to children.National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said teachers alone should not be made responsible for such an important task.
“As teachers, our contribution is to teach the subject academically and it is the parents and the community’s contribution to help ensure correct behaviour and discipline in the children,” she told Bernama yesterday.
She was commenting on the statement by Deputy Education Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi in the Dewan Negara yesterday that sex education would not be introduced as a specific subject because it was already covered under social and reproductive health studies already being taught in schools.
Lok said the subject was taught in seven modules which included gender awareness, HIV/AIDS and making right decisions where sex was concerned.
It is understood that, so far, about 1,000 teachers had been trained and were teaching the subject.
Lok hoped more teachers would be trained to teach these modules. — Bernama
